Sodium silicate is used in large amounts as a raw material for derived products based on SiO2 such as zeolites. Certain zeolites are used as molecular sieves in natural gas processing.
The moulds used in foundries are often made on the basis of sand. These moulds consist of sand and sodium silicate which is insentitive to the high temperatures which may develop. Moreover, the final porous castings are sometimes impregnated with sodium silicate.
